Awesome Things to Do in Cancun
Situated at the tip of the glorious Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations. The region’s beautiful blue Caribbean waters, beautiful tropical landscapes, and bustling nightlife are just a few reasons tourists keep coming back.
Here are some of the most popular Cancun experiences for travelers. Below you’ll find a range of activities, from adventurous outdoor day trips to easygoing, centrally located outings.
Experience Local Cenotes
The Yucatan peninsula is famous for cenotes, which are old, naturally occurring types of sinkholes. They form after the limestone surrounding the area collapses. Beneath, there’s a network of rivers that flow underground with fresh water.
Cancun, Tulum, and the neighboring Playa del Carmen areas are all fantastic base locations for tourists who want to take cenote tours. This is one of the most memorable experiences I had while visiting this part of Mexico
While exploring a cenote, you’ll see incredible stalactites forming from the underside of the rock cavern. The water usually has plenty of fish too, which are beautiful to see while snorkeling. Note however that snorkeling and other underwater activities usually require a proper guide.
Discover The Coba Ruins
Visiting the Coba Ruins is a hugely popular day trip experience from Cancun. Walking through these ruins will transport you back to ancient Mayan times, as you uncover a tapestry of monuments and stone streets that date back 1200 years.
Day trips to the Coba Ruins are relatively inexpensive, too. It’s best to book a tour that includes transportation, as many of the archeological sites and cenotes are in private, remote areas. Unless you prefer exploring solo, a guide can also be helpful to see the smaller, tucked-away parts of the ruins.
Party at Coco Bongo
Cancun’s most well-known club is Coco Bongo, famous for nonstop partying. Choose which show interests you most, and get ready to be entertained by impersonators, acrobats, and musicians. Joining a conga line or getting lost in a sea of bubbles is also never out of the question.
Coco Bongo entry tickets are usually more affordable when booking through GetYourGuide. And while they’re not the cheapest thing in the world, Coco Bongo is worth including in your travel plans.

Cancun’s Underwater Museum
If you’re a fan of sculpture, you can’t miss experiencing the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art. I mean, an underwater museum isn’t something you hear about every day!
The museum contains a total of 500 sculptures, including an underwater Volkswagen. You can explore them in a few different ways. If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s possible to scuba dive to see everything up close. You can also take advantage of the glass bottom boat the museum has.
Cancun Interactive Aquarium
Love visiting aquariums and watching the marinelife swim? Take a trip to Cancun’s Interactive Aquarium where you can see nearly 2,000 different sea creatures and species.
It’s conveniently located in Cancun’s coastal Hotel Zone and is something any tourist of any age can enjoy. Plus, it’s relatively inexpensive compared to aquarium prices in other tourist destinations.
The Interactive Aquarium has interactive tanks where you can hold starfish or even scuba dive to feed all sorts of fish and other sea creatures. Dolphin experiences are available as well.
Shop in Downtown Cancun
Tired of the clubs, adventure activities, and beaches? Head into Downtown Cancun for a fun shopping trip. It’s an easy place to make friends with other travelers, people-watch, and experience a bit of local life.
One of the coolest markets in Downtown Cancun is Mercado 28, a flea market with a ton of small shops. It’s just one of the many awesome places to shop in Cancun.
Heading to Mexico? Holbox Island is a dreamy, absolutely must-visit destination not far from Cancun!
