If you didn’t know there was such a thing as a gay safari, now you do! wolfyy interviews South African gay safari guide and founder of Brom Africa, Dawid Lamprecht, who gives the full rundown of what it’s like!

Tell Us About Yourself and How You Got Started with Gay Safaris!

My name is Dawid Lamprecht, and I’m passionate about nature, animals, and fostering connections between people.

My journey into organizing gay safaris stemmed from my own love for travel and exploration, coupled with a desire to address the concerns of gay travellers like myself. I understand first-hand the uncertainties and safety considerations that can accompany travel, particularly in regions like Africa.

Having explored the wonders of South Africa myself, I recognized an opportunity to create a unique travel experience tailored specifically for the LGBTQ+ community.

By curating gay safaris, I aim to offer travellers not only the chance to immerse themselves in the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife of Africa but also the assurance of a safe and inclusive environment where they can simply relax and enjoy the beauty around them.

What’s A Gay Safari Really Like?

An absolute blast! Surrounded by stunning African landscapes, wild animals, and a group of fabulous LGBTQ+ travellers, gay safaris are all about adventure, fun, and embracing your pride.

They offer a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and trust within a safe and inclusive environment tailored specifically for gay travellers. Here’s what you can expect from a gay safari experience:

Inclusivity and Acceptance: A gay safari is your ticket to a world of inclusivity and acceptance. From the get-go, you’ll be embraced for exactly who you are, creating a space where you can let your rainbow flag fly high and free.

Whether you’re flying solo, bringing your bae, or rounding up your friends, everyone is embraced for exactly who they are, creating an atmosphere of celebration and freedom.

Expertly Curated Itinerary: Gay safaris are thoroughly planned to provide a well-rounded experience that highlights the best of Africa. From the majestic roar of a lion to the graceful stride of a cheetah, every sighting is a reminder of the awe-inspiring beauty of the natural world.

And with a crew of fellow LGBTQ+ adventurers by your side, the excitement reaches a whole new level of fabulousness. And when the sun sets, the party doesn’t stop – it’s all about dancing under the stars and soaking up the infectious energy of the African night.

Exclusive Accommodations: Accommodations on a gay safari often include luxurious lodges, tented camps, or boutique hotels that offer both comfort and charm.

These establishments are carefully selected for their quality, service, and commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity. These accommodations are havens, where you can kick back and make some new friends over a cheeky cocktail or two.

Handsome Guides: Guides lead safari activities, sharing their expertise on local wildlife, flora, and fauna. They ensure that guests have stunning encounters with Africa’s iconic animals and an unforgettable adventure. They might even take off their shirts for a tip!

Cultural Immersion: In addition to wildlife viewing, gay safaris often incorporate cultural experiences, such as visits to local communities, cultural performances, or culinary adventures. These opportunities allow travellers to connect with the rich heritage and traditions of Africa.

Social Interaction: One of the highlights of joining a gay safari is the opportunity to meet and bond with fellow gay travellers.

Whether enjoying sundowners around a campfire or sharing stories over dinner, these interactions create lasting friendships and memories. Who knows – you might just find your new BFF or even your next travel fling!

Overall, a gay safari offers a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and community, allowing LGBTQ+ travellers to explore the wonders of Africa with confidence and comfort.

When Did You Start Leading Gay Safari Tours?

I dipped my toes into the safari scene part-time since 2014, just casually helping people out and spreading some safari vibes. But you know how it is when you find your true passion – you just can’t get enough!

In 2023, I decided to take the plunge and go full-time with this safari shenanigans. Brom Africa officially strutted onto the scene in January 2024, ready to serve up some fabulous safari realness to our gay family.

What’s Your Favourite Animal to See On Safari / What’s The Most Rare To See?

My personal favourites? I’ve got a soft spot for those majestic hippos. They may look all cute and cuddly, but make no mistake – they’re the reigning queens of the waterways, and no animal dares to mess with them!

Let’s also not forget about the Southern Ground Hornbill – not only is it an absolute stunner with the most fabulous lashes, but it’s also the star of our logo and the namesake of Brom Africa.

Now, onto the rare sightings – The elusive leopard is the most iconic. Catching a glimpse of one of these beauties is like winning the safari jackpot!

And let’s not forget about the nocturnal creatures – the pangolin, the civet, the aardvark – they’re like the VIPs of the animal kingdom, only making appearances under the cover of night. Spotting one of these elusive creatures is a moment you’ll never forget.
